Editorial Rough Draft

College cost these days

With the cost of college these days on the rise.  Students have been held back from applying to go to their dream college because of that college raising their cost of tuition.  I believe that colleges and the government need to help pay and or find some ways to make college more accessible and financially easier for students. This way the students that want to further their education can go to the college that they want to.

I think there are four things about college that really caught my eye.

First, the overall cost of college.  The overall cost of college has gone up 6.6% since 2007.  This is crazy just to think about how much college is going to cost when we start having kids. This is going to be outrageous.
Second, the cost difference from in state tuition compared to out of state tuition.  In state tuition is much cheaper than if you were to out of state for college unless you go to a state where reciprocity is available. That will cut your out of state cost down by quite a bit but it will still cost you lot of money.  Staying in state could save you a lot more money and I am sure that if you were to go out of state for college that a college in your home state would have the major that you want to go into.  This is a great way to save money.

I was always told this and am still being told this “It doesn’t matter where you go to college; the only thing that matters is what you do after you’re done with your college education.”

Final thoughts is that I think scholarships and national grants are probably the best way to get your college cost down to as low as it could go.  You can never save enough money.  Take advantage of scholarships and national grants because it is all free money that does not have to be paid back.  You can never go wrong with free money that does not need to be paid back unlike all the different loans that you do have to pay back.

Feature Story Final Copy

With the warm weather approaching faster each day students are getting antsy to get there last summer as a high school student under way.  The warm weather is a great thing that brings out everyone to enjoy the day especially high school students.  Summer is the best time of the year for people in school, because school is done and freedom at home until their parents get home from a long hard day at work.  Students that are not in school anymore often have chores to do during the day while their parents are gone but if they were like me, they would get them done right away in the morning before their friends wake up so they can hang later.

The seniors that are graduating this might be the last times that they get to hang out with their friends before they split ways and go to college.  Therefore, the kids are going to take each opportunity like the one if it was going to be there last time ever hanging out.  I know I will do this when I get the chance to hang out with my friends.  Do not take friends for granted worked so hard to get friends and they might not always be there so you got to work on keeping them forever.

When I asked Jack Yakowicz a senior at Eastview High School, what he was planning to do this summer he replied with a smile on his face “I have to work to continue to work in order to make money for college. But I am looking forward to spending time with friends and playing some beach volleyball for the last summer before college.”

Beach volleyball is starting to become a very big hit now days.  It has become a huge hit with students from Eastview High School trying to catch some rays and have some fun while hanging out with some friends.  Jack Yakowicz, Hunter Abramson and Derek Schatz all play some beach volleyball.  I am also sure that a lot more do also including me (Garrett Runing).  Many adults that enjoy playing beach/sand volleyball after a long hard day of work with friends that get a team together and play in different leagues.   I also got many different responses when I asked different people what they were planning to do this summer.

Derek Schatz another senior at Eastview High School responded to my questions with an “Ummm… I plan on gaming a lot on the Xbox 360, hang with my boys and play some beach volleyball, and I have to work at Andy’s Market so I can buy things in college.”

Well you see here, having a job in the summer is a very good thing and idea if you do not already have one.  A summer job will give you money throughout the summer so you can enjoy time with your friends if you happen to go out somewhere at night or during the day.  This is when the kids that do not have a summer job begin to hurt when they go out with friends, and the friend covers them.  They just end up hurting even more because they have to pay their friends back so they are even.  Now is the time you have should score on a job.

Summer is a very busy time on the roads with all the travelers going to different points on the map.
I asked Hunter Abramson if he was planning to travel this summer.  He replied right away with “Yeah I am traveling this summer.  I am going on a fishing trip to Ontario, Canada again just like last year.”

When I asked Jack Yakowicz the same question, I got a response like “Yeah, I think I am going to my cabin and then I will also go to other friends cabins.”

Traveling outside of the United States and going to cabins has always been a major thing to do doing the summer.  My family and I also like to make trips to our cabin Elysian which is 20 minutes north of Mankato.  Cabins and lakes are always a big hot spot during the summer, filled with a bunch of students that are out of school and trying to have a good time.  I am planning to bring friends down a lot this summer for a weekend just to have a good time and enjoy the freedom that we have now that summer has come around.

“I have a feeling that this summer is going to be a summer to remember for a very long time,” said Kyle Jonas.

Then I asked Kyle Jonas why it is going to be a summer to remember.  The answer he gave was “I get to spend it with the people that I have become so close with during these 4 years at Eastview High School, which I am going to spend as much time with them as I can before we all take off in are separate ways to different college all over the United States.”

Every summer should be a summer to remember in my book.  You have to do everything you can to make it a good one.  I think this year’s summer is going to be one to remember, being that it is senior year summer before college we are going to spend a whole lot more time with are friends that we aren’t going to college with.  We better enjoy every day that this summer brings to us and make it the best day ever and make every day after that better than the one before it.

I wanted to know what their favorite part about summer was.  Jack Yakowicz answered, “Playing some beach volleyball because it is going to be the 3rd year we have done this and it is just a good time chilling with the bros and catching some rays while playing something that we like to do.”

Hunter Abramson added, “I am looking forward to hanging with my friends and enjoying the summer sun with them before we go to college.”

Derek Schatz was last to chime in with “Not having football every day and having the summer days and nights to relax, game on the 360 and chill with people and catch some rays.”

We have to take in every time we are with are friends because it might be the last time you see them for a long time.

I was determined to figure out what other people’s favorite part about summer was.

Hunter Abramson shouted out without any hesitation “Beach volleyball games. It is fun to chill with your friends and catch a few rays while doing something fun outdoors.”

Paige Runing answered “Seeing friends that go to a different school than you, sleeping in of course and trips to the cabin.”

Kelsey Schile answered from a distance “not having school!!!!!!”

I would have to agree with all of these people on what their favorite parts about summer are.  My favorite part would have to be hanging out with friends from school and routine trip down to the cabin for the weekend loaded with fun.  Therefore, everyone go out and have a fun and rememberable summer.  Good luck in next year schooling to all.
